Questions from parents
Worrying about your child and looking for help is a good step. Here are answers to questions parents and other caregivers often ask.
When does help make sense?
When worries or changes last longer than a few weeks and noticeably affect everyday life: at home, at school or with friends. For example, if your child withdraws a lot, is very anxious, no longer wants to go to school, sleeps or eats poorly, or if you as parents no longer know what to do.
You do not need to be sure that therapy is necessary. That is exactly what we clarify in the initial consultation.
If your child talks about harming themselves, do not wait: you will find numbers for immediate help at the bottom of this page.
How do I talk to my child about it?
Ideally at a calm moment, without time pressure. Describe what you notice, without blame, for example: “I have noticed that you often seem sad lately.”
Explain that some people’s job is to help children and teenagers with their worries, just as a doctor helps with a stomach ache. An appointment does not mean that something is “wrong” with your child.
Teenagers want to have a say. Ask what matters to them. You can read the page for children and young people together.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
- Your child’s health insurance card (or a replacement certificate)
- If available: reports from doctors, hospitals, school or youth welfare services
- For school-related questions: the latest school reports
- A list of any medication your child takes
- Your questions. Feel free to write them down beforehand.
You do not need a referral.
Which language are sessions held in?
German or Persian, or a mix of both, whatever suits your family.
What does the code on a report, invoice or sick note mean?
Diagnoses are recorded with an ICD code, for example F93. You can look up what a code means here at gesund.bund.de (in German).
We are happy to discuss questions about your child’s diagnosis in person.
In an acute crisis?
The practice is not an emergency service. You can get immediate help here:
- Emergency number: 112
- Out-of-hours medical service: 116 117
- Nummer gegen Kummer, helpline for children and young people (Mon–Sat, 2–8 pm): 116 111
- Nummer gegen Kummer, helpline for parents: 0800 111 0 550
- TelefonSeelsorge, crisis helpline (24 hours): 116 123
Most helplines are run in German.
